If the remote system is config'd to allow remote xdm (gdm if a gnome linux system)
sessions, then you can simply run another instance of the installed X server on the
OS X system (I use Apple's X11 on 10.3.3) on another screen as:
X :1 -query remote-host -once
Since the Apple X server is rootless, the screen will be a bit busy, but
the remote host's wm will be used for its windows where as the quartz wm
is used for local X windows.
The -once kills the X server on :1 after logging out of the remote host.
Without the -once, the xdm login box will appear for another login. To
escape from this situation, manually kill the X server running on :1.
Works for me.
