You are right. I thought it did, and I don't know about the
xfree86.org binaries, but with my self-compiled xfree86-4.4.0 on
Jaguar, quartz-wm does not work, indeed. This functionality seems to
be reserved for Panther.
The problem is that the AppleWM extension that quartz-wm relies on
changed between Apple's X11 beta 3 and 1.0. It was only a beta after
all. You can't run the beta 3 quartz-wm with the 1.0 version of
X11.app either. XFree86 4.4 (on any version of Mac OS X) supports the
1.0 standard of AppleWM. In the future there will hopefully be other
open source window managers that use AppleWM and they will work on
Jaguar and Panther. In fact someone could write an open source window
manager that looked just like quartz-wm and duplicated many of its
features. Unfortunately, there is no window manager currently
available using AppleWM 1.0 on Jaguar.
