The best place by far in my book is Fink -- I don't think I've ever successfully compiled and installed
an application from source for Unix until I met Fink:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/
Read the FAQ and documentation thoroughly and have fun exploring the world of open source
on Mac OS X. Through Fink, you can either download binaries or source and compile. It handles
all the dependencies for you.
