If you just want to test X11, start X11 and type xclock & at the prompt in
the xterm window to start a clock in the background. That is an X11 app that
is already there. Another X11 app is a calculator - just type xcalc at the
prompt in the xterm.
Many serious X11 apps are intended for data analysis and visualization. A
big exception is Open Office, an office suite.
