Thanks, I've now changed the security settings, too. The previous
version of Apple's X11 must have had this authentication disabled by
default, because I never had to venture into that corner of the
preferences menu before...

I've used X11 since the betas and it has worked well for me. Just
recently I used a wireless laptop for the first time and noticed
that, after sleeping the computer (hence, I assume, losing the
network connection), that upon awakening X11 applications failed to
run because they could not connect to the display. So I was wondering
if this is a bug or feature. My usage was at a conference, hence
limited in duration, and my "solution" was to restart X11, but this
rapidly became tedious.
I reported this problem to Apple earlier this year as a bug report and
got an answer telling me that it was a feature (and the bug report was
changed to a "not a problem" report): something to do with the
authentication being invalidated when the network changes.
I've worked around this by disabling connection authentication in X11:
new connections now generate the message
Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11
forwarding.
but I'm not too bothered: I only ever connect in or out using ssh.
