X11 libraries

This is not a direct X11 question, but I am writing a program that need to link to the
X11 library (found in /usr/X11R6/lib). How can I set up the compiler (gcc 3.2.2) to automatically
check this directory, so that I can use -lX11 without having to use a +L?
Cheers
