PROBLEM #1: X11 doesn't recognize any startup files.
I've now had poor success figuring out how to get X11 to work properly
on 2 different Macs running OS 10.3.5. I have it running ok on a 3rd
Mac. The key difference so far is that the Mac that has X11 working
has /bin/tcsh as it's default shell. The other 2 Macs have /bin/bash
as the shell. The key problem is that on the Macs that are running
/bin/bash there appears to be no file that it recognizes as a startup
file. I've tried tried the following files:
.xinitrc, .cshrc, .login, .profile, .bash_profile, .bash_login,
.tcshrc and none of them are read.
I put a test echo statement in each of the above that is something like:
echo 'Im inside the xxx file'
I never see this statement executed. On the Mac running /bin/tcsh the
.tcshrc does get executed. This is problem #1.
PROBLEM #2: Now X11 dies immediately upon startup
Thinking that the solution was to change the default shell to
/bin/tcsh, I went into NetInfo Manager and changed the default shell of
my account from /bin/bash to /bin/tcsh. The Apple Terminal Application
was fine with this change. However, X11 died. I restarted my Mac and
still the same. I then changed the default shell back to /bin/bash.
Once again the Apple Terminal Application was fine with this change.
However, X11 still died. I restarted my Mac. X11 still dies. I
reinstalled X11 and restarted my Mac. X11 still dies. Right now under
all conditions X11 does not work on Mac OS 10.3.5.
Can anyone help?
