unfortunately you must have a hosed X11 installation.

It does actually. Xterm without intervention, Terminal.app - on this
installation of mine - with the Terminal preference option "Execute the
default login shell" which makes executing .bash_login or "Execute this
command" where you may point to a environment setting script of your
choice.
On my .bashrc I also have the lines:
# Trap on SIGHUP
trap 'sh ~/.bash_logout' SIGHUP
which makes Terminal.app execute .bash_logout when I Quit it (the
application, not the single Terminal windows, that happens already).
This was a trick I had to apply to have Terminal kill my ssh-agent on
Quit command.

Your X11 was and is hosed. I would not try to fix it. Dunno what others
think but a clean-up and reinstallation seems to be the way to go. One
can switch default shells usually without any trouble. X11 behaves
rather nicely.
