This is because X11 forwarding is disabled by default in OS X.
Solution:
sudo -s
echo X11Forwarding yes >> /etc/sshd_config
exit

If I run
ssh -X <linux machine |solaris machine>
X11 forwarding works fine: the DISPLAY variable gets set to a local
proxy server.
However, if I try the same to a MacOS 10.3.4 machine, I can't get X11
forwarding to work at all - the DISPLAY variable is never set.
Manually setting the DISPLAY variable to the local machine (+ allowing
connections with +xhost) works fine, but is ugly and of course runs
the session unencrypted.
Am I missing something very simple?
