Since I do not use Matlab myself I asked around at the physics theory
department. They practically all have Macs, they run Matlab, gnuplot
and LabView daily and heavily, they have bash and... the problems you
are facing are new to the ones I spoke to.
They say if something else was happening the news would spread like
wild fire. Any new Mac in the department have to work with MatLab on
the physicist desk in matter of minutes, not over a month :-}
There is something else causing the environment misbehave in bash in
your case.
It must be a local thing common to your Macs (you said it happens with
two), innocent looking, and breaking havoc.
Bash is behaving as expected here and the diversity of use at the lab
is enough to cross-out - with a good Confidence Level - any possible
bug in it causing your problem.
I'll try see whether one volunteers to go through your installation
process with you but it would be hard: they are rather busy.
