This is somewhat off-topic for this list. Apple and OmniGroup have
lists that discuss this kind of problem. That said:

Has anyone had trouble mounting CDROMs recently, presumably after the

No problems here, with two Mac OS X systems running 10.3.5.
Even more strange, I don't seem to have an /etc/fstab file, and
there's no device called /dev/cdrom (should there be?).
There is (convention adhered to my Mac software) no "/dev/cdrom". CDs
and DVDs are devices named "/dev/disk1", and the like. I have one
mounted now, of that name.
When I insert a CD (that was burned to be readble on any machine) into
the internal drive, or an external drive (LaCie CD-RW) via FireWire,
nothing happens. The only way I was able to eject the CD from the
internal drive was doing Fn-F12, since nothing was visible from the
Desktop and nothing showed up in /Volumes. Same problem with the
external drive, except Fn-F12 doesn't even work.
You need to see what is in the system log at the time you inserted the
CD. There may be useful info. I'd also check with a known-to-work CD
(like the ones you got with Mac OS X).
I have a 400 MHz Ti Powerbook G4 running OS X 10.3.5. I only noticed
this problem after the 10.3.5 upgrade.
The missing 'fstab' file is odd, but not cause for alarm. It isn't
necessary for normal operation, and is present only for mount behavior
that differs from the default.
Regards,
Justin
