Hi,
In my experience you don't have to put the OSX preference into 256
color mode, just the X-11 display preference. This works fine for me
with legacy 8-bit color code. It does require a re-start of X-11 but
that just takes a few moments. The rest of my display for other OSX
apps is still in 24 bit mode.

hi,
first off thanks to all the responded to my post a few weeks ago about
using pseudocolor, and using both pseudocolor and truecolor visuals at
the
same time. to recap: using both similutaneously is not supported
either
by apple's x11 or by xdarwin on the mac currently.
one thing that i would like to add though: some folks, including the
response i got from apple's bug reported, that to run pseudocolor in
apple's x11 i should set the display preferences to 256 colors and then
launch x11. this isn't so elegant a solution for a piece of software
you
buy at the store. however, i discovered that issuing
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx -- -depth 8
gives me pseudocolor in rootless mode using apple's x11 without having
to
drop the entire OS into 256 color. maybe everyone is aware of this,
but
it didn't come up in the discussion.
