Ake,
The emacs that ships standard with Mac OS X is not compiled with X11
support on.
While there are several binary distributions of carbon emacs for Mac OS
X without X11
support, I'm not aware of any binary distributions of emacs with X11
for Mac OS X.
However the recent CVS emacs source code does support this. Thus you
will have to
download the source and compile emacs. Probably the easiest way to do
this is by
downloading the latest CVS source code for emacs and compiling it.
If you're running Panther and have the Apple development tools
installed, then
the following commands can be used to extract the CVS source code and
compile
it (note: the cvs command will extract the emacs source and create a
subdirectory
called "emacs" in the directory you invoke the cvs command from):
export CVS_RSH="ssh" cvs -z3
-d:ext:email@hidden:/cvsroot/emacs co emacs
(verify that the site's public key is
80:5a:b0:0c:ec:93:66:29:49:7e:04:2b:fd:ba:2c:d5)
cd emacs
./configure --with-x --without-carbon
make bootstrap
sudo make install
When this completes the X11 friendly version of emacs will be in
/usr/local/bin.
Another way to compile emacs is to use the fink environment. It
requires more setup
initially, but does allow you to compile many other common UNIX
software for
Mac OS X.

I have successfully established connection to a remote machine with:

When I run emacs or other programs on the remote machine I get a
beautiful X-window. There cannot be a problem with my X11. How do I
then start my own emacs in a X-window?
I have Emacs 21.2.1, which is installed with Jaguar. I can run it in
the terminal window or in the X11-terminal window but it refuses to
open in a new X11-window. The mouse doesnt work and the menus are
unreachable.
Help me!
