Thanks to those who responded to my earlier post. I apologize for not
explaining my problem better.
I am trying to display, on my mac laptop running panther, X output from
programs that run on a Solaris 8 machine named flagfish. The company's
network is huge, and my personally-owned laptop gets assigned a new name
and IP address every time I log on.
On flagfish, /etc/sshd_config has "X11Forwarding yes". [By the way, this
is one of those parameters whose meaning is not made clear in the
documentation I have read. My usual way of working is to log in on
flagfish, then telnet to the computers of program A, where I have a
different login name and password. Occasionally, I need to do stuff on
the computers of program B in conjunction with program A. I would set
DISPLAY to my home computer on all of these computers and be receiving X
window commands directly on my laptop or desktop PC. Now that I am being
encouraged to use SSH instead, does setting "X11Forwarding yes" in each of
these machines, and using ssh instead of telnet, mean that I will be
getting all X display commands from flagfish? But, I digress.]
On my mac, following Jerry Talkington's web page, I have created a file
~/.ssh/config:
Host flagfish
ForwardX11 yes
User r3d
That is why I used "ssh flagfish" rather than "ssh -X flagfish".
I have left X11 Preferences on my laptop set at the default: Allow
Connections from Network Clients, because it seemed harmless for getting
started.
I created a ~/.xinitrc file, but removed it.
Here are some observations I have made, that may or may not be relevant:
- The default xterm that comes up when I start X11.app has no PATH or any
environment variables set. It doesn't even recognize the "ls" command.
- Therefore, all my attempts to use X11 have been from Terminal.app
- When I ssh or telnet to flagfish, then invoke vi, it warns:
"xterm-color: Unknown terminal type
I don't know what kind of terminal you are on - all I have is
'xterm-color'.
[Using open mode]"
- As I mentioned earlier, the strings SSH_CLIENT, SSH_CONNECTION, and
SSH_TT on flagfish all look reasonable (flagfish and my IP addresses,
etc.)
- DISPLAY is not set on flagfish.
- When I set DISPLAY manually, and attempt to connect, I get:
flagfish% Xlib: connection to "#.#.#.#:0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
My coworkers all use "conventional" (not SSH) X window connections using
Exceed on their PCs, so I have no assurance, other than the presence of
the sshd_config file, that ssh connection is even set up on flagfish.
I would be happy with instructions to do anything that works! It all
seemed so much easier in system 9 with MacX.
- Pete
