I too had problems with this. All that I can say is that I believed I
had "X11Forwarding yes" in /etc/sshd_config at the remote end of the
link, but I was mistaken. Fixing that made things work. If your remote
Solaris system has sshd running continuously (rather than launched on
demand as it is by default in Panther), you'll need to send it a hangup
signal to make it notice any change in the config file -- see the
command's man page.

Here are some observations I have made, that may or may not be

This is really odd. It could be a bad interaction between your shell
start-up files and the xterm. Try seeing what the shell's doing on
start-up by copying /private/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to ~/.xinitrc (if
you don't have your own copy already) and amending the copy to read
...
# start some nice programs
xterm -e 'bash -x' &
...
(replacing "bash" with your shell of choice).
- When I ssh or telnet to flagfish, then invoke vi, it warns:
"xterm-color: Unknown terminal type
I don't know what kind of terminal you are on - all I have is
'xterm-color'.
[Using open mode]"
Could be that flagfish has an incomplete or missing termcap/terminfo
database, that it's not in the standard place, that it has incorrect
permissions, or that you've got an incorrect TERMINFO variable in your
environment. Something to check with flagfish's admins. Try using
TERM=ansi and see if that gets you anywhere.
