Actually, ssh-X it is now working properly. I don't know what I was
doing wrong, but it now works. I can say that DISPLAY gets set on the
remote host if I use ssh -X. However, I definitely prefer my
jiggery-pokery, which is known as "xauth." :-) It's faster than -X by
far. This was just a test to see if ssh -X works for me.

You know, I ran a test and find I am having a similar problem when
logging into remote machines and depending on -X to set my DISPLAY.
DISPLAY is not getting set. I tried removing my .bashrc and .profile
files on the remote machine, and I get no DISPLAY set. Weird. I
have solved the problem with xauth, ifconfig, cut, and grep, :-) but
it would be nice if it worked as it is supposed to.
I doubt that your connection is being forwarded by ssh, if you have
had to resort to that kind of jiggery-pokery to make it work. Which
may or may not bother you. Are you sure that the remote machines are
configured to allow X forwarding?
Cheers,
Nick
