I can only say as a developer who works on the X server that
supporting Psuedocolor visuals on a TrueColor display is non-trivial.
The XonX project has been aware of this desire for a while and this
will likely be near the top of the stack once XFree86 4.4 is released.

The best way currently is to open two instances of the X server at
the same time with different display numbers in rootless mode. Have
one set to use PseudoColor and the other TrueColor. This is still
somewhat tricky if you need to access both types of visual from the
same program, but you may be able to do this by modifying your
program to connect to both displays and drawing to the appropriate
one.
