Actually our software is still 8-bit color running on Solaris/Sun

pseudo-color correctly. We have no problems using it with our

Just to clarify, what Matt Shultz is trying to do is to use
PseudoColor and TrueColor visuals on the same display. This does not
work with Apple's X11 or indeed with many other X servers on other
platforms as pointed out by others. Apple's 1.0 release of X11 does
handle PseudoColor correctly if you set it to start that way but then
you can't use TrueColor. A previous beta tried to mix and match the
two in a way that was incorrect.
PseudoColor is an unfortunate holdover from earlier times when using
indexed color schemes to save video card memory made sense. Its
staying power has been surprising.

You shouldn't need to rewrite the entire application. You should only need a
color translation routine to take your PseudoColor maps and display them on
a TrueColor display.
Yes. This makes you think that the X server could do this for you.
Someone spending the time to get all the bookkeeping right for the
general case is what is needed for the X server to support this
feature.
