As somewhat of a newbie of the intricacies of X11, I have a number of
questions. Perhaps this would help clarify things for us beginners, and
know what to install and what not. Mainly what are all the 'X's, and
which ones are related to X11. I'm sure it's easy for people who know,
but it confuses me - and I am a programmer who uses the Terminal
everyday!
For example with
$ fink install
x11 [virtual package]
x11-shlibs [virtual package]
xfree86 4.3.0-14 XFree86 distribution
xfree86-base 4.2.1.1-16 XFree86 libraries, utilities, clients
and data
What is xfree86?
Where is the Virtual Package linking to?
What exactly is /usr/X11R6?
Is this libraries that the Apple version is linking into or something?
What is the X11SDK on the developers disk, and why doesn't it get
installed by default since for Fink especially you're better off with
it?
I have got all this to work but occasionally if I'm installing
something I get a question about xfree86 and I have no clue what to
answer :-)
Thanks in advance,
Gary

G'day Bob
I have not yet had the pleasure of a G5 but X should be already
installed on
your system.
Open a terminal window, ( located in the utilities folder )
cd /usr/X11R6
Then do a ls to see what is there
If you have a directory named bin and lib and include and man then X is
there..
You are now 1/2 home..
In your utilites folder which is in applications you should see a file
named
X11
Double click it..
Surprise .. You are now in an X window..
IF you have a three button mouse ( I have a Logitech ) you then have
the
"full power" of any and all X features in the different applications..
There is also a README in the /usr/X11R6 directory..
And there are lots of O'Reilly books on X and the tools or toys :->
You may need to edit your .tcshrc file to include the path to the X
stuff
Hope this helps..

I just got the G5 and want to install x11.
I can't find it on the Panther disc. Instructions on installation
said
it is on the distribution cd and I need to do a "custom install".
Ok, should I go ahead and "install os x" (scary!).
Would I be better off just downloading the package?
If anyone could post step by step instructions, I would be very
grateful.
I am a former Windows user (and very disgruntled about MS).
Thanks in advance,
Bob
