I use Evolution under Linux for that, and it gets me a good amount of
the functionality, but by no means all of it. It's certainly a lot
better than Outlook Web Access and a web browser.
I don't know of anything other than Microsoft's own offerings that
works under OS X, and don't know how well those work because I haven't
tried them.
I found this a while ago:
<http://www.snerdware.com/groupcal/>
which apparently allows iCal to work with Exchange calendaring.
However,
the page was last updated in December, when they were promising a
release
date of Jan 15th - not too reassuring.

On Linux if I create a window and call
XSetWindowBackgroundPixmap(display, window, None), the window will be
created transparent with no background color. On Mac X, it seems white
is the default background color, so I get a white window. Is there a
way to get a transparent window on Mac X?

I tried several combinations in my home/.xinitrc file. They all seem
to end my X windows session within a couple of seconds.
I solved the problem my minimizing the KDE desktop wallpaper. The
menus and applications etc. were fully operational after that. A minor
annoyance.
Perhaps there is a setting I can find, but for now it is ok.
Next, I want to install an office suite that is MS compatible with
word, excel and if possible, Access.
Thanks for all the help!

I've got the following in my ~/.xinitrc file

That is the only way I got it to wwork

Hi all,
I succeeded in installing X11 (downloaded it) and all dev packages on
the disc.
I installed FinkCommander and using that, did a binary install of
KDE.
KDE starts and seems to run; however I can't select any of it's
windows and those window's close buttons and controls are grayed out.
What did I neglect to do?

I use mutt/IMAP to connect to our exchange server at work, but don't
get the
nifty calendaring, meetings, etc. But at least I can get my mail.

Yes it can -- it is designed to be an IMAP client and
Exchange supports IMAP. The details of getting it to work
will depend on exactly how things are set up, and whether
you have all the right things compiled and configured in
your version of Pine. I don't run Pine this way myself, but
know of colleagues who do. Based on their experiences, I
would add that you may find the options for getting it to
remember your password aren't very satisfactory (not
particularly secure).
