Thanks again.
It would be nice if Apple honoured the claim they make on their X11
page, http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/ :
"Double-click apps Launch X11 applications directly in the
Finder."
This works if the file is named gnumeric.X11app and chmod +x (you may
have to use Get Info to set X11app as an extent for X11.app:
#!/bin/sh
/opt/local/bin/gnumeric
I will experiment with $* and such to see if they work also. I tried
doing that with gnuclient, but had no luck yet.
I cannot get drag and drop to work with this, nor can I get "Open
With" to work. I suppose you would need a launch wrapper that
recognized the drop and passed the filename[s] on to the program. Why
doesn't the system populate the "argc, **argv, **envir" and pass them
to the shell?

Isn't there a way to make an Applescript that calls a shell command
with the names of the files dropped on it? Surely there is.
