I'm a spoon-fed Mac user. From my limited perspective I can't understand
why it's any different to running apps in classic. You double click the
app, it wants a different working environment, so the machine fires it
up. From this point of view the only thing standing between my Mac and
X11 apps is the time and effort it takes smarter cookies that me to do
this.
And the lead on this is being taken by the application writers. Take
OpenOffice.org and The Gimp as examples. With OOo, they provide a
script to first launch X11, then OOo. With Gimp.app, the application
launches X11 in order to launch itself. There's not many more steps
left to closer integration.
If Apple is planning on an integration of X11 into the MacOS, they
will be considering how to let people choose a default window manager
other than Aqua and how to extend the capabilities of the dock in
order to make it more attractive than KDE/Gnome's panels and
taskbars. This is what I'd be looking for in Mac OSX11.
