Hi all,
Thanks for a stimulating, and overall positive and constructive
discussion. As you know, Apple doesn't discuss future plans, but I did
want to make a few comments:
1. We realize X11 is very important to a lot of customers, and
continue to consider ways to make it better. We are grateful for the
discussions on this list.
2. We want X11 to be as seamless on Mac OS X as possible -- given the
intrinsic technical differences between X11 and Quartz. Please, file
bugs if something doesn't work the way you think it should.
3. Whether or not X11 becomes a default install, it is unlikely to
ever become -mandatory-. If anything, Apple is moving towards *more*
flexibility and granularity in packaging. Long term, we'd like to move
towards a smarter and more automatic dependency mechanism to resolve
these issues. Until then, we'll have to consider each app on a
case-by-case basis.
4. While we are excited about and grateful for the many technical
applications coming to Mac OS X via X11, our ultimate goal is still to
see native, Aqua-compliant solutions on our customers wherever
possible. I believe "Beautiful" and "X11" are constraints impossible
to fully satisfy simultaneously. :-) Thus, there will always be some
tension, but that can be a healthy thing.
5. Finally, the comparison with Classic is telling: while Classic is,
and perhaps always will be, part of Mac OS X, we no longer ship the
entire Mac OS 9 operating system with every copy of Mac OS X. The goal
is to find ways to move people forward.
I realize that doesn't answer all your questions, but hopefully it
provides some useful context.
Best,
Ernie Prabhakar
