Well, first: how do you connect to the Sun box? Do you use ssh or
(arrgh!) telnet?

This "myhostname.local" smells of the rendezvous name of your machine,
so probably it's not surprising the Sun doesn't know anything about
it.

Trash this 'advice' about xhost.
At any rate, if you from a terminal session on the mac do:
mac> ssh -X sunbox.your.domain
this gives you a session on the Sun _and_ it takes care of the DISPLAY
variable through the ssh tunnel. So you should be able to just say
sun> emacs &
at the Sun prompt. If it doesn't work you may want to check if one of
your startup files on the Sun (.profile, .login, .chsrc,
.bash_whatever) does one of those silly things as setting the DISPLAY
variable. It shouldn't: let ssh take care of this.
