The TrueType bytecode interpreter has been turned off by default in XFree86,
because Apple hold some patents in the US that make interpreting that
bytecode without their permission illegal. See
http://bugs.xfree86.org/show_bug.cgi?id=666 , and the link on that page to
the FreeType project.
To my knowledge, Apple haven't expressed a position on whether it's legal to
turn on the bytecode interpreter when XFree86 is running on Mac OS.
