I'm a heavy user of Apple's X11, both at home and work. I use it at
work to connect to my Linux box for development work on Linux (this is
on a G4 cube) and at home on my 12-inch Powerbook (what can I say? I
like some X apps). I've found Apple's to be noticeably faster than
other ports (not trying to start a war here; I've used both Apple's X11
and OroborosX, and OroborosX is just visibly *slower*, especially on
the cube). In general, I've been pretty happy with it... with one
exception.
The "Customize/Application" is ridiculous. On at least one machine (my
cube), I've had it get confused to where it would move items around on
the menu, but not move the shortcuts. I had Apple-R set to open a red
xterm, and one day I hit that and got xman... when I tried to correct
the problem in Customize/Applications, it wouldn't let me... it just
kept changing the shortcuts back when I would tab out of the Shortcuts
field.
Anyone else seen this bizarre behavior?

4. Cut and paste out of X11 is a mess. As for trying to cut and paste

6. The Applications Customize editor is a joke. (Can anyone tell me
what
the "shortcut" entry does?)
I fall into the category of happy with X11 1.0, but I basically open
xterms, use a text editor (NOT emacs), and occasionally display an X
app
from a Sun Box on my Mac. I guess I just don't push it as far as
most, so
I'm satisfied with its performance.
Anyway, just to address the 2 points above, I've found that cut & paste
work ok, if not perfectly. If you copy from any Aqua application, then
use the middle mouse button in X, it pastes. If you use Apple-C for
copy
in an X app, then use Apple-V to paste into any aqua app, it works for
me
if I hit Apple-V twice. So, not perfect, but ok.
As far as point 6, what is so bad about the customize menu editor? You
add a menu item by giving it a name, and an X command, like:
B&W Xterm xterm -fg white -bg black
The shortcut option allows you to set a keyboard shortcut, so if you
want
Apple-B to stand for open black xterm, you type a "b" in the shortcut
cell.
Just my $0.02.
