I figure I'd better say a bit more about the environment on which I
reported these problems.
* I am running an iBook with a wireless connection to a local network.
* 90% of the X11 applications that I am running are hosted on a remote
server.
The problem I described of X11 refusing to create new windows is quite
intermittent, but does not involve change of network or address.
However, it is worth noting that the wireless connection can take several
seconds to restore, so perhaps the problem arises when trying to make a
remote connection before the network is fully restored.
