Would this help?
http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/fonts2.html#3
I seem to remember that all I had to do was put the fonts in any Font
folder and type sudo fc-cache.

Thanks. That's a nice idea. Too bad Apple didn't just make
their X server able to find the fonts in the system location to
begin with. Our X server does this automatically, but it's a
Windows product, not an Apple one.
It's strange that it would have to extract the .ttf files from the
.dfont files. I believe Freetype 2 can read dfont files directly.
Although a dfont file can contain multiple fonts and I don't know
how you specify which one. I seem to recall it was something
like "times.dfont;1" "times.dfont;2"

How to you add a TrueType font to Apple's X11 X server?
I have a font which is a plain .ttf, not a .dfont.
What I'd really like to do is just install the font so that OS X
knows about it and have X11 automatically find it.
Well, there's this:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/pdb/package.php/applesystemfonts
Description:
Make Apple system fonts available to X11R6
This package will extract the TrueType fonts from your Apple System
and Library directories and make them available to X11R6.
Warning: This package can get *VERY* large depending on how many
fonts you have in your system. TrueType fonts will get symlinked,
so they won't take much space, but any dfont files in the /Library
or /System/Library directories will get converted to TrueType and
copied to your fink tree.
