Most of the suggestions are similar, and I am very grateful, but I
have tried most of them them many times before. As I mentioned, I get
the scroll bars, the vertical double arrow icon when I hover in the
scrollbar, the vertical single up arrow icon when I try to drag in the
scrollbar -- but nothing actually scrolls.
I think the key here is that you are thinking that the scroll bar on an
xterm works like the apple scroll bar. The shaded area just shows you
where, as a percentage of the buffer space, you are located. If you
want to scroll up, place your cursor above the shade and press
option-click. The shade will jump up to where you clicked and the
scroll window will move up. You can use the option-click below to shade
to scroll down or just normal click in the scroll bar.
