You're both right from a GUI research/usability point of view. :-)
Fits' law says that Rich is right, if a mouse action is needed. Other
studies have shown that changing from one mode to another
(mouse -> keyboard, for instance), is a big productivity waster.
So, tying this back to the Mac - if you already have one hand on the
keyboard and one on the one-button mouse, you're going to be able to
take advantage of both principles. You hit the modifier with the hand
on the keyboard, click with the hand on the mouse, and a menu pops up
where the mouse pointer currently is.
Yes, you could do the same with a multibutton mouse, but the usability
arguments for such go away to a large degree if your hand is already
sitting on the modifier keys, ready to simulate a right mouse button
click.
