I have xmperf working on a suse 9.1 Linux instance with:

I wish I could get it to work with OS X.
Why run the xset remotely? You want to set the property on your local
server, so surely you can do this:
xset fp+ tcp/font.server.address:7100
ssh -X email@hiddenss xmperf
This does depend on the font server port 7100 being visible to your
Mac, and not obstructed by a firewall.
