Hi list,
I'm a new X11 user, (G4, "wind tunnel", OS X 10.3.5), and most things
seem to be working. I've successfully installed Gimp and OpenOffice.org,
and have been installing a few programs with Fink Commander. I just
tried installing the binary of applesystemfonts and after downloading
etc. I get:
"You have an existing X11 installation in /usr/X11R6 and/or /etc/X11.
This package refuses to overwrite these. Remove them, then tell Fink to
install xfree86 again. (The package won't be recompiled.) If you want
to keep your X11 installation, install system-xfree86 resp. system-xtools
instead to make this known to Fink's package system."
What is this saying? How do I do this?
It is trying to explain to you how you could fulfill the wish you
expressed earlier, namely to install the Fink xfree86 package.
It is, however, highly likely that you expressed this wish without
really wanting to. You said "yes" when FinkCommander proposed to install
a couple additional packages besides the ones you chose. If xfree86 was
among these packages, you should have said "no" and instead tried to
find out why it wanted to do this. It only does this when your
installation of X11 is incomplete.
There is a Fink FAQ entry on this: FAQ#9.11 "I installed Apple's X11 but
Fink keeps asking to install XFree86 or X.org." at
http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/faq.en.html#usage-packages.apple-x11-wants-xfree86
