FWIW, I have a working version of X11.app running on top of the
Darwin DDX in the top of the X.Org tree. This allows you to use the
X11.app UI but get the advantages of the newer extensions and bug
fixes in X11R6.8.1.
I'm not quite sure how this differs from just using the existing
X11.app with an X.org /usr/X11R6 tree... What exactly does all this
mean?
This gives you server side support for all the extensions and new
features that are present in X11R6.8.1. That is, X11.app built in
this way will have all the features of XDarwin from X11R6.8.1, but
will have the X11.app GUI. If you like X11.app's Application menu or
its simplified preferences, you can have them and still keep all the
features of XDarwin that are missing from Apple's Panther version of
X11. Using Panther's X11.app with X11R6.8.1 won't buy you much
because none of the new extensions will actually work without server
side support for them.
