check the permissions and ownership of /tmp. probably running the
famous 'fix permissions' will take care of it. to check by hand, run
'ls -ld /private/tmp' in terminal. it should produce output like this:
>ls -ld /private/tmp
drwxrwxrwt 14 root admin 476 29 Sep 07:34 /private/tmp/
if it already has that permission and ownership, then there might
already be a file called .tX0-lock in that directory owned by another
user. you can delete the file using sudo if that's the case.
sudo rm /tmp/.tX0-lock
(note that /tmp is really just a symbolic link to /private/tmp which is
why I use that directory in the ls command above rather than /tmp)
does that help any?

I'm having problems with X11 failing to start. It worked very well up
until the last week. Here are the details -
System: OS X 10.3.5, dual G5
Console log message:
Fatal server error:
Could not create lock file in /tmp/.tX0-lock
OsVendorFatalError
AbortDDX
Quitting XDarwin...
Here's one of the odd things - there are several accounts on this
system, two with admin privileges, one standard.
Acct #1 (admin) - worked initially, still works fine.
Acct #2 (admin) - worked up until two days ago.
Acct #3 (standard user) - created just to test X11, X11 fails with the
same error on the console log.
I've tried completely removing and reinstalling X11 to no avail. I've
also run 'repair permissions' and that
doesn't fix the problem either. Any other suggestions (before do a
system re-install).
