Is it possible to run Apple's X11.app and Xorgs v 6.8.0 on the same
machine? If so how? Can a configuration file be changed, for
example, to make the Xorg version install in /usr/local (or some
other area than /usr/X11R6) ? If not, are the libraries
compatible--i.e. drop-in replacements?
It is possible to do most of what you asked.
You can install X11R6.8.0 in a non-standard place by adding the
following lines to a host.def file in xc/config/cf:
#define ProjectRoot /myRoot/usr/X11R6
#define NothingOutsideProjectRoot YES
If you do this you can run X11.app and XDarwin simultaneously.
However, generally the safest thing to do is to simply move
/usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11 aside to preserve Apple's installation and
then install X11R6.8.0 as usual. Since you will probably want the
Aqua look for your windows, you would copy quartz-wm from Apple's
/usr/X11R6/bin directory to the new X11R6.8.0 /usr/X11R6/bin
directory. If you copy Apple's /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to the same
place in the X11R6 distribution, you will start quartz-wm
automatically as it does with Apple's X11. If you want to switch back
and forth, just interchange Apple's and X11R6.8.0's /usr/X11R6 and
/etc/X11 directories. Some people have written simple scripts to do
this.
The libraries for X11R6.8.0 should be a drop in replacement for
Apple's (based on XFree86 4.3.0). However, this won't buy you much
because if you don't replace the X server (XDarwin instead of
X11.app) you won't get access to any of the new extensions. You need
both library and server side support for them.
