Don't mean to butt in, but at this point I might ask Kevin, could you
post the exact contents of your .xinitrc file?
Mine looks like this:
/Users/tmgregg>more .xinitrc
. /sw/bin/init.sh
autocutsel &
export KDEWM=kwin
quartz-wm --only-proxy &
/sw/bin/startkde >/tmp/kde.log 2>&1
If yours is similar, then you may have problems caused by TextEdit.
Depending on how you save the file, it may append a .txt extension to
the file without telling you, in which case X11 won't see the file.
This is my file...
#!/bin/sh
source /sw/bin/init.sh
export KDEWM=kwin
/sw/bin/startkde >/tmp/kde.log 2>&1
but... I have it working now.
I made the file with Mi (a text editor I sometimes use for html) and it
worked. Must have been a problem with the kind of file TextEdit makes.
My file is very different from yours - does it matter, should I use
yours instead?
Many thanks to all who helped, I now have KDE up and running.
