First, according to the Apple Store, my copy of the retail version of Tiger
will arrive this AM. I suppose that means I can use it and ask about it
without breaking rules. I am not a developer, or at least I never purchased
the Tiger preview. Perhaps I won't get an answer to my question before
18:00 US-PDT 29 April 2005.
My query
I have Xorg
version number: 11.0
vendor string: The X.Org Foundation
vendor release number: 60802000
X.Org version: 6.8.2
running under OS X 10.3.9.
I would like to know what to expect wrt the new XFree86 4.4 on Tiger as
compared to what I have now with the Xorg version.
I like the Xorg version quite a bit better than I did Apple's 4.3 based
X11.app. I am using the version with Torrey's patches that create a
rootless quartz-based X11.app. I like the rendering of fonts compared to
the original. I like the fact that xprd and xprint work for Gimp2 and
Mozilla (GTK2), which was not the case with X11 that came with 10.3, at
least not for the non-postscript (Windows) printers on my network.
I use X11 for most everything I do. So having a working version is
important. On the other hand, being able to use quartz-wm as a manager is
also rather important. So I wonder whether when I install Tiger, I will be
able to simply retain my existing X11* system and forego updating it until
I know about specifics such as whether the Xorg features I have begun to
depend on are in it also?
I know I am jumping the gun, and a guy pushing fifty ought to have more
patience, but my curiousity just gets the better of me at times.
