A recent thread (subject: A Newbie Question (really!?)) has give me
renewed hope that the following is possible: I would like to change
window focus using the shell, not the mouse or keyboard.
I picked up that maybe I can use escape sequences to do this?
I know that CMD+` cycles through the X11 windows (but seems to skip
some on my 2nd monitor). I would think that CMD+SHFT+` would cycle
*backwards*, and so sending that once would return focus to the parent
xterm. But the SHIFT key which means "backwards" with CMD+TAB and TAB
and lots of other keys does not work in this situation :(.
In more detail: I am mostly using X11, xterm (or shell via emacs), and
IDL (Interactive Data Language by RSI, not Interface Definition
Language). In IDL whenever a graphic window comes up it takes the
focus away from the xterm or emacs session where the input is going
on. I then have to wiggle the mouse before I can continue typing.
I am resigned that if I type the PLOT command (which opens a window)
my xterm will not have the focus. But I would like to roll my own
WINDOH command that calls WINDOW and then maybe executes a shell
command that returns focus to the xterm (where the command is being
run).
I'm not sure if this is possible, or how I would go about doing it. I
tried using AppleScript via command line to do it, but I have come to
the conclusion that X11 does not have an applescript dictionary so
this cannot be done.
Any advice where to go from here? Can anyone provide an example?
Thanks,
-k.
