Ryan McKay have just sent a solution!!! I'm going to try it...
Here is what I've submitted to VNMR News this morning.
Controlling VNMR with MacOSX – X11 display problem solution
Many people like to control the spectrometer, process data, examine spectra, and basically do their work from home or on a laptop. In academia many people love their Macintosh OSX computers but have run into a problem using VNMR under Apple’s default X11 installation. The problem is that mouse clicks do not seem to register on the spectral window (i.e. the cursors don’t respond). VNMR keeps moving focus to the command line window faster than most people can click on the spectra. The annoying solution was to double, triple, or even quadruple click to get the cursor to respond and even harder if you want to click-and-drag. Several users have reported success installing different window managers (e.g. twm available from the “fink” package installer) but this definitely reduces the Macintosh ease-of-use advantage.
A simpler solution exists but took some digging to find. In an xterm or in the “Terminal” application window type:
defaults write com.apple.x11 wm_click_through –bool true
This command modifies the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.x11.plist file and makes the window manager set mouse clicks to effect the spectral window even it is not focused on by the VNMR application. The spectral window then responds. Restart your X11 and you’re clicking and dragging like you’re sitting directly at the console.
In addition if you like mouse focus to follow the mouse type:
defaults write com.apple.x11 wm_ffm –bool true
These can all be reversed by replacing true with the word false in the command or you can use your favorite editor and do it by hand.
I found this command for another applications (and other interesting commands) on the following web page:
