Is it possible to export the display of a native mac os X application to

ignorant?
Native Mac applications don't talk X, so no, you can't do
this. You could use VNC (see for example
http://www.realvnc.com/resources.html) to export the whole
screen to another X11 display.
And... can I ditch aqua completely and replace it with a proper X11 window
Yes you can. But you can also run X11 full screen and
switch between the two, having the best of both worlds (this
is what I choose to do). I actually run Xorg (and its
XDarwin.app) through fink (http://fink.sourceforge.net/)
rather than Apple's X11, though the differences are small
(Xorg is like a newer version). Actually, I sometimes even
run Apple's X11 rootless as well as Xorg full-screen at the
same time (on different displays). This is good for a few
applications like Matlab that expect to have both aqua and X
windows open at the same time.
manager (say KDE)? if I do this will I loss all the native mac applications
and nice behaviour like my laptop sleeping correctly when I close the lid? If
I don't know if the sleep and energy saving things rely on
aqua apps to work correctly. There are command line options
to set preferences, so you don't need this part of the
interface.
I lose all this would I be better of ditching macosx and replacing it with a
better support unix/X11 combo (say linux)?
On Mac hardware, OSX (being FreeBSD underneath) is
unquestionably the "best supported" unix option... Other
options are possible: this list is probably not the best
place to find users doing this who can tell you about their
experience, since it is for discussing Apple's X11.
