I basically agree with Mark's suggestion as the most sensible
plan. Here are a few addtion notes:
1) One caveat in this is that you should _not_ close the initial
xterm. If you do, this end your xsession.
2) You probably want to use ssh -Y rather than ssh -X. Takes takes
care of X authentication.
3) Some things may not work 100% because Apple's X11 doesn't enable
some extensions which are standard on linux. The first two which
come to mind are xkb and xprint. Both of these can be enabled, but
(a) this is a pain, and (b) it doesn't seem to work correctly
anyway. (In particular, the xprint which comes with Apple's X11 is
the useless stub which comes from XFree86. This will not produce
useful output in most situations, and, as a result, printing from mozilla
applications will not work.)
4) You probably want to enable full screen mode if you'll be using
Gnome. Alternate window managers don't integrate well with the Aqua
desktop. (Although allegedly the next Tiger updated may fix some of
these issues).
5) Keyboard shortcuts which involve arrow keys are passed to the
focused application, even if they should be handled by the window
manager. The only work around I've found to this is to install a
different X server (I used Fink's Xorg).
