To answer the original post:
Perhaps something in the configure phase went wrong and the build
didn't pick the X11 libs?
I wonder, did you install the X11 SDK before you compiled Emacs with
Darwin Ports? If not then there would not have been any X11 header
files for the configure script to find and it would have compiled
without X11 support.
