Just to offfer another perspective, while many things will work, some
will not. Darwin is a very strange beast, and when you put Aqua on top
of it it becomes even stranger.
KDE does not compile on Mac OS X. (The version in fink is very heavily
patched). XOSview is another program to that works fine on *BSD but
fails to compile on a Mac. If the program you want is in fink, it will
compile and work reasonably well, but it may have limitations or be a
few versions behind. For example, the fink Xfig worked fine with
apple's X11 but not with XDarwin, even if I compiled it against
XDarwin's libraries???
Anyway, the long and the short of it is that you have a reasonably
good chance of getting it to work, but it may not work out of the box,
and a few programs will just plain not work without extensive
rewrites.

In 1997 a group of programmers started writing a desktop environment
to fix a travesty they didn't create. Their program promptly found
its way onto un*x systems everywhere. Today, still opposed by a
software monopolist, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you share
their vision, if you know you can help, and if you can connect to
internet, maybe you can join... the K-Team.
