If I understand the problem correctly, it is that letters and accents
are being displayed side by side rather than directly above or below
each other. This is most likely a font problem, of which I have seen a
similar occurence in Hebrew with "nikud" (vowels represented as lines
and dots above/below consonant letters). Fonts can contain both
symbols and "hinting" which tell where they should be placed relative
to other symbols. Many fonts, especially free fonts, contain the
symbols but not the hints, which are much harder to write. Try using
different fonts and see if any give better (or at least different)
behaviour to see if this is the problem.
