Correct, because the X server runs on your local machine. The single
open port required for X (typically 6000, but might be other as noted
previously) is on your local machine. The need to tunnel is
therefore only for when your LOCAL host is behind a firewall. E.g.,
if you are connecting to LLNL from your home machine and do not have
a firewall, you can connect back by just setting your DISPLAY on the
remote client machine to your home machine:0. I'm not recommending
it, though. :-) Get a firewall and do tunnel. X is an insecure
protocol for sure.
