I installed 'gnome-desktop' with Fink and would like to get the gnome
desktop environment up and running as I have a number GNOME based apps
that I use on a regular basis, rather than running each one separately
from the terminal.
Did you read Michèle Garoche's answer to your question on the
fink-beginners list? She told you what to do and what is also written in
the Fink documentation, for example at
<http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/x11/run-xfree86.php?phpLang=en#xinitrc>
namely to create a file named .xinitrc in your home directory containing
the three lines
. /sw/bin/init.sh
quartz-wm --only-proxy &
exec gnome-session
Then any time you start X11 by double-clicking on the X11.app icon, you
will get the gnome desktop. The command you are looking for is
"gnome-session", not "gnome", but you shouldn't run it from the command
line, because it wants to run its own window manager and doesn't run
when another window manager is already running.
Something weird going on with my e-mail. I am not getting anything from
the Fink list at all these days. MyRealBox has been a little erratic,
but it works fine with this list. That is why I posted here.
I followed the advice exactly like you described above. Nothing happens.
I put the three lines at the end of the file. Anymore ideas?
Cheers,
Brian
