You'll have to give us more information on what the problem is.
iPhoto 5 typically performs library updates w/o a problem. You can
try holding down the Option key when you start iPhoto - this lets you
select the iPhoto library to use. That may help; if not, you can
probably get an answer from the Apple iPhoto discussion group:

Gimp is not what you want, it manipulates images, not image libraries.
