I just installed X11 on my macbook and I recall the installer
package was in the "System" folder (maybe a subfolder thereof) on
disc one of the two that came with the MacBook.

Ah, thank you. I take it that was Rosetta failing silently!
Unfortuntately I don't have the MacBook discs with me, but I'll
install tonight when I get home.
I can't recall whether this is the case, but the appropriate
installer *may* be in /Applications/Installers...(new machines ship
with the Xcode Tools installer in this directory; I can't remember
if X11 is in there offhand).
