Lately, when I log into my Macs from abroad, they have their terminals set to "dumb." The command I was using was ssh machine bash -il
After logging in, I get no control chars, etc., and "echo $TERM" prints "dumb".
I know the "bash" part is extra, but it comes out of a customization script I wrote and did no harm previously. If I remove the "bash", then I get the proper terminal settings and all is fine. I can then type "bash" at the prompt and get a subshell that also works properly. My question is, why? What is happening beneath the hood to screw up my terminal, and why did this just start happening a couple of weeks ago? One hint might be that I am running a newer bash on my local machine... is that a factor? -- The primary task of most software projects is to discover and resolve these unknowns rather than to build a system. -- Philip G.
