I had not really looked at this before, since Nedit is the only X11
application I use, and copying and pasting between it and Aqua
has always worked for me, by copying a selection in Nedit with
Ctrl-C and pasting into Nedit with Ctrl-V, and copying and pasting
in Aqua with Cmd-C and Cmd-V.
But this sequence of emails got me curious, and so I have been
playing with it a bit, and I have found out some interesting things.
In xterm, if I select some text and then copy it with Cmd-V (either
from the keyboard or from the X11 Edit menu), and leave the text
selected, then I can paste the text into Terminal or TextEdit with
no problem.
However, if I select some text in xterm, copy it with Cmd-C, and
then deselect the text, I cannot paste anything into Terminal or
TextEdit. If I try, nothing is pasted, and I get a beep in Terminal.
But, if I select some text in xterm, copy it with Cmd-C, leave it
selected, and paste once into Terminal or TextEdit, then I can
deselect the text in xterm and still be able to paste it into
Terminal or TextEdit as many times as I want.
It seems like Cmd-C in X11 isn't copying the selection
into the Aqua clipboard until an Aqua paste is done.
This seems to be reliable and reproducible, something Apple
can hopefully track down. In the meantime, it seems to provide
a usable work around, by leaving the text to paste selected for
at least the first paste.
This is on a dual processer G5 PowerPC under OS X 10.3.9.
I also got exactly the same results on my Intel Core Duo
MacBook Pro 15" under OS X 10.4.6.

Interesting...indeed, wwhen the text is deselected after hitting command-C,
it will no longer paste into Aqua applications. (Though I do not understand
why Apple would cause this to be the case, it is indeed the case.) I hadn't
noticed that. Sometimes when it is selected, though, it still fails to
paste.
Selected text, after hitting Command-C, never fails to paste anywhere for me that I have observed. This sounds like a bug. I sure wish you could reproduce it reliably. Without a reproducer, there is no way to fix it.
